OVERVIEW
Over the past 10 years, Vail Resorts has invested more than $125 million in improvements to Vail Mountain. Soon, Vail Village and LionsHead will get the same attention. Vail Resorts and the Town of Vail are working together to make North America's top ski resort destination even better. Plans call for new skier service facilities, additional shopping, dining and lodging, a new ice-skating rink, entertainment venues, enhanced streetscapes and landscaping, plus new residential opportunities. The many Vail redevelopment components fall under the umbrella of "Vail's New Dawn."

LOCATION
Vail, Colorado - 110 miles west of Denver in Colorado's Rocky Mountains.

VAIL'S NEW DAWN COMPONENTS
There are two components of Vail's New Dawn - The Vail Front Door and Vail Square projects. The "Vail Front Door" project is designed to ensure that our guests experience a world-class destination before they ever set foot on the mountain. It is a commitment to provide guests and residents with first-class facilities, amenities and services. The Front Door project will address the on-going needs of a maturing resort community, ensuring it remains vibrant and active.

The Vail Front Door project entails the following features and amenities:

  • Founders Garage and Parkers Green
  • New Lodge at Vail Chalets
  • New base area, luxury ski club
  • New Vista Bahn ski yard and plaza
  • New streetscape and landscape
  • New state-of-the-art skier services facility, including ski school, rentals, lockers and lift ticket offices
  • New spa and accommodations at the Lodge at Vail
A proposal for the redevelopment of LionsHead evolved out of the LionsHead Master Plan approved by the Town of Vail in 1998. The objective was to transform the redeveloped area into a first-class, destination mountain resort that captures the timeless Old World feel and ambiance of the finest European villages, while blending it into the distinctive character already established in Vail Village. The result was the recent unveiling of a redevelopment plan for the 2.27 acre core site of LionsHead...Vail Square.

Vail Square has been designed to include the following:
  • New skier bridge - completed in November 2004
  • A European-inspired pedestrian village only steps from the Eagle Bahn Gondola. Construction began in Spring 2005.
  • The Arrabelle at Vail Square - A 36-room luxury hotel that will be owned and operated by RockResorts, modeled after the grand resort hotels of Europe.
  • 67 private residences and penthouses within The Arrabelle. Residential owners will have access to all hotel services, amenities and rental management provided by RockResorts. Construction is well underway.
  • An outdoor ice-skating rink for winter usage that can be used in summer as an amphitheater for concerts and events. A Vail Square Glockenspiel is also planned.
  • Vibrant new streetscape designs, signage, lighting and snowmelt under pavers - creating a fun and festive atmosphere for visitors and owners to enjoy year-round.
  • Approximately 33,000 square feet of new retail space including state-of-the-art skier service facilities, restaurants, boutiques, galleries and entertainment venues.
  • New underground parking, loading and delivery space - designed to lessen unsightly deliveries within the area. Available for use by nearby merchants.
VAIL
In 1939 construction began on Highway 6, running from Denver through the Gore Valley. Charlie Vail, the project's engineer, lent his name to the road--Vail Pass--and eventually the Town of Vail.

During World War II, the Army's Tenth Mountain Division used the Vail area for backcountry survival training. After the war, many of the men who trained there were drawn back to the mountain valleys because of the recreational lifestyle. Pete Seibert, one of Vail's founding fathers, was one such veteran; he returned to the Valley along with fellow troopers Bill "Sarge" Brown and Bob Parker. The three vets shared a great vision of a mountain ski community modeled after the great alpine villages of Europe. In 1954, Earl Eaton, a uranium prospector with a similar vision, teamed up with Seibert to draw up a plan for a ski resort. The ski resort opened in December 1962, and by winter 1965, the Town of Vail was incorporated. Vail had the first gondola in the United States, along with two double chairlifts and a beginner poma lift, serving six square miles of terrain. Several restaurants, hotels and a medical clinic opened their doors soon thereafter.

Today Vail provides a lifestyle that combines one of the best alpine resorts in the world with a friendly, small-town feel. Vail offers an abundant array of recreational and cultural opportunities. Visitors and residents alike enjoy the 1,100 acres of open space accounting for 30 percent of Vail's town-owned land; 350,000 surrounding acres of national forest, crowned by 5,289 skiable acres on one of the largest and best mountains in the world, 15 miles of recreation paths, the highest botanical gardens in the world and an outdoor amphitheater.
